Valença is located on a hill overlooking the left bank of the Minho, opposite the Galician town of Tui and on the main road that links Santiago de Compostela with Porto. The old district of Valença is a very unusual double town, consisting of two Vauban-style fortresses joined by just one bridge. Spanish tourists flock here to buy embroidered tablecloths and sheets, the speciality of the town. Peace and quiet returns to the town in the evening.
