Valença - a charming ancient village

The town of Valença do Minho sits alongside the Minho river opposite the town of Tui, Spain, and dates back to Roman times. A fortress first built in the 13th century is perched strategically atop two hills and is an impressive work of military architecture. It was battered repeatedly by Barbarians, Arabs, Spanish armies and French troops up to the 19th century, and has been rebuilt time and again, ever stronger and more imposing. Inside, the village is full of life, with streets full of tourists and locals browsing and bargaining in the many linen and embroidery shops. With lovely views of the Minho valley and neighboring Spain, a 12th century church, tiny cobblestone streets, walled gardens, and curious shops, I was enchanted by the place! Add to all that a fabulous lunch and endless dessert buffet in the pousada's dining room with 280-degree views, and I was ready to stay awhile! Alas, we only had an afternoon. Nonetheless, we made the most of our time in Valença do Minho and the rest of northwestern Portugal...until next time...
