Valença do Minho, in Portugal across the border formed by the Minho River, was originally a fortress town built to protect the frontier from Spanish incursion. The fortress is one of the most popular attractions in Portugal. The old town is surrounded by huge stone ramparts.The ramparts and old town were built in the 18th century.Situated on a hilltop, its first walls and ramparts were built around 1200. However, what can now be seen is a double-walled fortress in the Vauban style, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries.
