This hilltop cathedral is no mere church - its battlements and thick walls make it more like a fortress.
This monumental medieval cathedral was consecrated in 1225 after over a century of construction. Standing in place of a castle, the cathedral’s imposing silhouette looms above the town from every direction. The grand main portico is a masterful work of masonry, and is the earliest example of Gothic art in Spain. The interior decor reflects the cathedral’s heavy architecture, using sheer mass to make their impression. The cloisters are particularly impressive, with their vaulted ceilings, columns, and altars of stone and timber. After exploring the numerous chapels, visitors can take the stairs up to the battlements to view the church from another perspective, or gaze out over the town and surrounding countryside.
